Evidence-based treatment confirmed by clinical and scientific studies

Evidence-based medicine uses approaches to treatment and diagnosis that are proven to be effective. They are considered as such because clinical and scientific studies have confirmed this. In particular, you can check whether your doctor is evidence-based. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with a link to the Facebook of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

What does evidence-based treatment mean?

Evidence-based treatment has been confirmed by clinical and scientific studies – that is, the difference between large and comparable control and experimental groups of volunteers in all respects is statistically significant.

Also, these results can be reproduced in other similar samples of people. This means that if a doctor prescribes a certain drug or intervention, it will have the desired effect every time.

What is considered unproven

Experts noted that medical advice and recommendations based on unproven and outdated methods can have serious consequences for health and life.

Unfortunately, not all doctors rely on the principles of evidence-based medicine and follow innovations and changes in treatment protocols.

Signs that a doctor is evidence-based

There is a list of criteria that can be used to determine whether your doctor follows the principles of evidence-based medicine. Among them:

  • does not refuse you vaccination, but on the contrary – insists
  • does not prescribe “preparation” for vaccination in the form of antiallergic drugs
  • knows how to distinguish the flu from a cold
  • antibiotics treat only a confirmed bacterial infection, and not ARVI or “red throat”
  • does not recommend detoxification, liver cleansing, gall cleansing “from toxins”
  • does not recommend lowering the temperature if it is below 38 – 38.5°C
  • talks about the importance of breastfeeding
  • does not prescribe homeopathy or immunostimulants “for prevention”
  • knows that a mother does not need a diet during breastfeeding
  • explains that there is no need to take vitamins all year round for prevention
  • advises and refers to a psychologist if necessary
  • does not prescribe inhalations with solutions that are not intended for this purpose
  • prescribes only medicines with proven effectiveness
  • treats parasitic infections only based on laboratory confirmed data
  • knows how to explain treatment tactics, the need for a particular prescription in understandable language

It is important that if you are not satisfied with your family doctor or your child’s pediatrician, you have the right to sign a declaration with another doctor at any time.
