Proper care will help save your skin.

Winter is a difficult period for our body. My mood deteriorates, it’s cold, and I’m also plagued by problems with my skin, which becomes dry and chapped. Proper care will help save your skin.

Exactly how to properly care for your skin in winter, RBC-Ukraine tells with reference to the “Take care of yourself” tips on Telegram.

Why do skin problems occur in winter?

When air temperatures and humidity levels drop, signs of xerosis, or dry skin, may appear. Namely:

  • Skin feels tight, especially after showering, bathing, or swimming
  • Skin feels rough to the touch
  • Itching and flaking of the skin
  • Cracks appear that may bleed
  • Redness

Reaction to cold can vary. Some people experience allergies with skin rashes, fever and swelling.

The skin may also react to:

  1. Increased sensitivity to cold
  2. Sudden changes in temperature when we move from indoors to outdoors and vice versa
  3. Dry indoor air due to heaters

The Center for Public Health warns that if dry skin is not taken care of, it can lead to atopic dermatitis (eczema) or infections. When dry skin cracks, bacteria can enter the wound and cause inflammation.

  • Facial cleansing. Choose products that are labeled “moisturizing” or “gentle.” Avoid cosmetics containing alcohol – it will dry out your skin even more.
  • Body cleansing. The body also needs careful care. Look for products in the form of cream-gels and mousses. The more creamy the consistency of the product, the better. Choose products without fragrances (fragrance free). If you have eczema, then choose products with Vaseline, shea butter, and silicone. Mineral oils and lanolin are also helpful.
  • Moisturizing the face. Such care depends on the condition and type of skin. Please note that not all facial moisturizers are suitable for use in winter. The American Academy of Dermatology advises looking out for jojoba oil and lactic acid in ingredients. If you have any doubts, consult a specialist.
  • Body hydration. Choose products in tubes rather than bottles. Such creams have a denser structure and moisturize better. In winter, you should not choose products with glycolic and salicylic acids, as well as retinol. If this is not possible, consult a dermatologist about the best way to care for your skin.
  • Sunscreen. Yes, despite the winter weather, you also need sun protection. Choose sun protection with an SPF of at least 30.

What you shouldn’t forget

  1. Protect exposed areas of the body in cold and windy weather. Wear a hat, scarf, gloves.
  2. Wear rubber gloves when washing dishes. Especially if you use harsh detergents. Use moisturizer. Select a product together with your doctor which cream is right for you. Especially if there are additional complications, such as acne.
  3. Use shower gels with moisturizing ingredients.
  4. Use a humidifier indoors in winter.
  5. Wash with warm water rather than hot water.
  6. After showering, pat your skin dry with a towel rather than rubbing.
