How to avoid making a mistake when buying tangerines in a store and distinguish sweet tangerines from sour ones

New Year’s holidays always smell like tangerines and oranges. Most likely, a ripe tangerine will be sweet. To choose a sweet tangerine and not make a mistake, just take a closer look at the external signs.

What you need to pay attention to when choosing a sweet tangerine

  • First of all, you need to pay attention to the color – ripe and sweet tangerine with a deep orange color. Yellow, greenish color, and even more so pale, indicates that the tangerine is likely to taste sour.
  • The shape of a ripe tangerine will be close to a perfect circle.
  • On the peel of the fruit – the peel of a sweet tangerine is often not very thick, while that of a sour tangerine is thin.
  • A sweet tangerine is heavier by weight, so just take a tangerine in your hand, it will be heavier than an unripe, and therefore sour, tangerine.
  • A pleasant citrus aroma will indicate that the fruit is ripe and juicy.
  • Ripe, juicy tangerine is soft and elastic. But you need to avoid fruits that are soft or, conversely, hard to the touch.

So, to summarize, choose only tangerines with an intense orange color. Pale, yellow or even green ones are unlikely to be tasty. The skin of this fruit should not be too thick, but if it is very thin, then tangerines are difficult to peel.

If the fruit is noticeably heavy when you pick it up, that’s a good sign. It has a lot of juice. Ideally ripe fruits also have a pleasant and expressive aroma and are round in shape. Delicious tangerines are also elastic, but not hard. Do not take soft tangerines; any damage will affect the quality of the citrus fruit.
