Traditions of this day
The Monk Gregory was a deacon in Mediolan, but left for Alexandria, where he became a bishop. He performed many miracles, healed the sick and cast out demons. He also helped stop the war between the kings of Ethiopia and the Omirites by acting as a mediator between them. He died in peace and was buried in the Caves. His relics are kept in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
On this day, it often warmed up and some of the ice on the river melted. The owners gradually began to plan spring work and prepare equipment. On this day, people sorted grain for planting and checked bins.
According to popular beliefs, on Gregory you must eat meat dishes and home-baked bread for good health, longevity, success and prosperity.
If on Gregory’s day you walk around a haystack three times against the sun, then this year you can get rich.

- If frost is visible on the haystacks and trees, it means that the summer will be cool and stormy.
- The wind is from the south, which means there will be frequent thunderstorms and rain in June.
- Clear weather portends a dry and hot summer.
- People said: “If there is a lot of snow on Gregory, there will be a lot of bread.”
- If the sky is cloudless and clear, it will be early spring.
What not to do on this day
- Take out ashes and garbage so as not to throw away your happiness.
- Slander and think badly of others.
- You should not do heavy housework so as not to bring poverty to your family.
- It’s better not to cut your hair today so as not to steal your happiness.
- You should not guess or make plans for the future on this day.
- You can’t drink a lot of alcohol today.
