A number of experts and even the US Federal Bureau of Investigation recommend that citizens avoid using free charging stations

When traveling, we often take with us various gadgets that have the annoying property of running out of charge at the most inopportune moments. To achieve this, free charging stations have long been installed in public places and transport. However, software security experts do not recommend that citizens use such “points.”

Why you should avoid free charging stations

A number of experts and even the US Federal Bureau of Investigation recommend that citizens avoid using free charging stations at airports, hotels or shopping centers.

According to experts, cybercriminals have found ways to use public USB ports to inject malware and software.

Such “third party” software installed through a damaged USB port may, in particular:

  • block any portable device
  • export personal data and account passwords to attackers
  • provide access to other information on the gadget for further “monitoring” or resale

How to Charge Your Phone Safely in Public Places

To safely charge phones and other devices in public places, citizens are advised to:

  1. Bring your own charger and USB cable
  2. use an electrical outlet to charge
  3. If possible, purchase and carry an external battery with you – a portable charger for gadgets (power bank)
  4. When connecting to a third-party USB port, always select the “charge only” option (instead of “share data” or “trust this computer”)
