You should avoid fatty, rich soups made from meat, with the addition of cream or vegetable oil. Such dishes will be very high in calories

Many people believe that first courses are mandatory in the diet. They say that without them, nutrition will not be complete, and the stomach will not be able to function properly. But is this really true? The answer to this question is given by RBC-Ukraine with reference to a post by coach Yuri Popko on Instagram.

Are soups healthy?

“Those who lived through the Soviet era remember that for lunch it was customary to have a first course and something as a side dish. Mothers said that you should eat the first course so that your stomach doesn’t get upset,” or “if you don’t eat soups, you’ll get gastritis.” “But there are peoples who do not eat first courses at all and this does not in any way affect the quality and duration of their lives. So are soups really an integral part of our lives, or is it just a tribute to tradition?” – writes the expert.

He adds that classic chicken soup includes potatoes, grains, drumsticks, cabbage, peas, water and spices. It turns out that all these products can be eaten without general cooking. The volume of the dish increases due to water, but the calorie content does not, because water has zero calories.

“Therefore, the soup does not have any additional healing properties. The only exception is bone broth, from which you can get collagen, but for this you need to cook it for 48 hours,” says Popko.

He adds that it doesn’t matter how you eat these foods – raw, otherwise cooked, or boiled into soup.

“But the big advantage of soups is that the volume of the dish increases. The stomach quickly fills and stretches, and a feeling of fullness appears. It turns out that we consumed few calories, and we gained satiety due to the volume of the dish,” says the trainer.

Therefore, if you are losing weight, then soups are healthy dishes that help you eat few calories. The only drawback is that there are many ingredients in such dishes, so it is difficult to calculate the calorie content.

Which soups are better not to eat?

“You should avoid fatty, rich soups made from meat, with the addition of cream or vegetable oil. Such dishes will be very high in calories, especially if you also add a lot of pasta or cereals,” says the trainer.

Cream soups saturate the body less well because they take less time to digest.

“To sum it up, eat soups if you like them. If not, then nothing bad will happen if you don’t have them in your diet,” explains Popko.
