What ways will help you warm your feet during a long stay on a cold street?

Walking in cold, snowy weather can be a lot of fun. And sometimes you have to spend a long time on the street waiting for transport or going about important matters. And during winter, there is a high risk of freezing in your feet, and if it freezes too much, you even get frostbite.

Verywell Fit tells us what methods will help you warm your feet during a long stay on a cold street.

Choose leather shoes

Winter sneakers often contain a mesh membrane, which is not very suitable for low temperatures. For the cold season, boots made of genuine leather are best suited. Your feet will definitely not get cold in these shoes. Ideally, the shoe material should completely block the incoming cold air.

Shoes should be spacious

To prevent your feet from freezing during a long stay in the cold, you should have room in your shoes or boots – this will help keep you warm. You shouldn’t buy boots two sizes too big – you just need to be able to move your toes, and the laces shouldn’t restrict movement.

We insulate with paper

Take a tip from Tour de France cyclists: paper is an excellent insulator. On cold days, take a paper towel or tissues and wrap them around the top of your feet, toes and under your toes. Then put on your shoes. This provides a thin layer of insulation that is just enough for comfort.

Plastic film

Tuck plastic wrap or bag between the top of the shoe, the top of the foot, and the toes. This will block the flow of cold air to your toes, and sweat will not accumulate on the sole of your foot. The polyethylene is thin enough to fit into your shoes without changing your sock type. If your feet get hot, you can always remove the bag and throw it away.

Disposable shower caps or shoe covers

They can be used as shoe gaiters to protect your shoes from rain and snow. You can wear them both over shoes and inside – over socks. Inside your shoes you will have a waterproof layer that will also protect you from the wind. This may cause sweaty feet and wet socks, so use this method carefully.

Scotch

Apply duct tape to the top of the shoe. It’s quick, easy and almost free to protect your shoes in bad weather. Cover the entire circle with tape, including the sole. The tape will stick and will not come off even during a long walk in the rain.

Double layer socks

A classic combination for long walks is a thin, sweat-wicking polypropylene sock and a wool outer sock. This is good for keeping your toes warm. Do not choose a combination that is too thick and your foot will feel tight in the shoe. Another trick is to wear nylon socks or knee-high stockings. They won’t add thickness, but will help keep your feet warm.

Foot warmers

These are special disposable inserts that provide soft warmth for up to 6 hours. They are worn in shoes above or below the toes. They are thin as insoles, but if the shoes fit tightly, you will have to choose thinner socks.

Don’t stand in one place

If you have a walk planned or you have to be outside for a long time, walk instead of standing in one place. The movement of your legs when walking will generate heat and your legs will not freeze. If you’re just walking, start at an easy pace for the first few minutes, then increase it, do intervals of fast walking and choose routes where there are slides or stairs to get the blood flowing.
