“Many DIY auto maintenance tasks can be handled with a basic set of wrenches, screwdrivers and ratchets, and purchasing your vehicle’s factory maintenance manual will give you step-by-step directions for routine maintenance and repairs,” the expert said.
The cost of repairs varies significantly depending on the model, but in most cases the engines will cost thousands of dollars. Therefore, you need to do everything possible to extend the life of the engine.
Change engine lubricant and filter regularly
This can be done at most auto repair shops for a small fee, or you can even do it yourself. All you need is a set of wrenches, a pan or bowl to drain the oil into, and an old towel or rag for cleaning.
“The oil change should be done every 8-11 thousand km, and the filter should be changed after every second oil change,” explains the mechanic.

Monitor radiators and supply them with coolant
“If you notice high temperatures or leaking coolant, which is usually light green or pink in color, you should have it checked. Again, regular fluid changes are beneficial and should be done every two years or 48,000 km,” advises expert.
However, he warns pet owners to be careful because ethylene glycol, a key ingredient in coolant, attracts animals and is toxic if ingested.
Additionally, it can be difficult to properly dispose of coolant, so seek advice from a trusted local mechanic.
Change spark plugs regularly
They can last up to 145 thousand km, but you should consider replacing them after 48 thousand km.
You should also make sure they are clean and properly cleared to ensure better fuel economy, which will save you money in the long run.
Change engine speed

“In general, you should try to keep the revs low to reduce stress on the system. However, doing this constantly can be harmful, as accelerating the engine close to the redline for a few seconds can clear carbon deposits from the valves and cylinders. Just be sure to do it safely place, for example on the motorway before changing gears, and only occasionally,” says the mechanic.
Fill with the correct fuel
Each car requires a different type of gasoline or diesel.
“Some engines require premium gasoline and usually have a sticker on the fuel filler door that tells you the minimum octane rating. Adding lower quality fuel can cause serious damage to these vehicles,” says Joe.
